Mussaendas are beautiful tropical shrubs from SE Asia. The will grow anywhere from filtered light to partial/full sun. During the Winter most varieties will loose all of their leaves, but as soon as the weather warms up they re sprout and start blooming right after. Here in South Florida Mussaendas are covered with flowers from March to December. Actually the real flowers are not very big, the colorful parts are actually bracts (modified leaves) and they come in white, red, salmon. light pink, light yellow. There are also a few varieties with multiple bracts (double flowers). Musseandas average height is anywhere between 4' to 7' and they should be trimmed early in the season to encourage branching. Water and fertilizer should be consistent with plants that go dormant during the Winter, drier and no food during dormancy, and moist/fertilizer during the growing season. Mussaendas will tolerate temperatures in the mid to low 30's for short period of time, they also can be grown potted and brought in during the colder nights.
